They end up inviting both of them by mistake and need Gloria’s superior interrogation skills to decide who they need to call and disinvite. Turns out, Cam and Mitch are in the middle of a “ friendship custody battle” between two of their friends who recently split up. So, she spends the day with Mitch and Cam as they try to adjudicate over their part invites. Finally, after 4 episodes of “ nothing special” from Gloria I actually really enjoyed her this week! She gets a little to excited about helping solve the crime in court that she gets kicked out. Jay advises her to skip it but Gloria is determined to take part. Gloria spends the day performing her very first duty as an American citizen – jury duty. Julie Bowen has always been great at the whole physical comedy thing and she certainly pulled it all out today – walking into doors, falling flat on her face in a pool of melting mint-chip ice-cream cake. As usual Claire’s need for excess and perfection takes her down a long road of destruction and she screws up every decision she makes. To show off her ability to lead she brings both Alex and Hayley for bring your daughter to work day. While Jay is away, Claire needs to take over at the closet business for the day. After the ridiculous day – in which Jay gets stuck in a kiddie slide – Joe personally ask’s his daddy if he can return the next day which was a nice little moment. It’s refreshing to see Jay hangout with his new son Joe because there hasn’t been much development around that relationship. Which resembled a child on timeout explaining why he did a bad thing. Or, when Jay has to shamefully explain what happened after calling a kid “ big ears“. I think it’s clear when I say Jay is at his funniest when it’s impossible to take him seriously – like when the lady at the daycare has to separate him from his assistant, which resembled a child being dropped off at day care. The comedy of this whole situation really comes down to well placed and well timed contrasts between a grandpa surrounded by toddlers and hippies. This was one such episode! All the characters are spending the day with their children outside of the house and a reluctant Jay is forced to “ volunteer” at Joe’s daycare. And, Jay spend the day well outside his comfort zone volunteering at Joe’s daycare.Įvery once and a while, Jay will step out of the background of lame old man jokes and passing comments, to really shine in an episode. Gloria gets kicked out of jury duty and turns Mitch and Cam’s party dilemma into a court trial. Claire takes both Hayley and Alex to work to show off her business side. Luke, Manny and Phil spend the day completing their community hours and learning life lessons all over the place. This week the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan made a great comeback after last week’s slightly dissatisfying episode. “That’s why I need a grease pencil in the shower…”
